SIM GE inculcates ‘soft skills' needed for work

Mr Alvin Lai explained the benefits of the SIM job fair and networking session to students.
EFFERVESCENT, articulate, independent.
These are the very qualities Mr Foong Wei Liang, a recruitment manager for Adecco Singapore, finds in the talent that he scouts from SIM. One of these talents is Mr Alvin Lai, 25, currently a management trainee at SMRT Corp Ltd.
Mr Lai, who graduated with a RMIT University Economics and Finance degree at SIM Global Education (SIM GE), credits SIMGE with giving him the skills to stand out in the workplace. Students from SIM have to go through the SIM PLUS over their three years of study – a comprehensive series of programmes designed to arm students with skills relevant to the workplace. As part of SIM PLUS, students attend workshops, where they learn interview skills and resume preparation skills. They also attend talks and fairs by industry professionals, while gaining practical work experience through internships and competitions designed to test their professional knowledge.
Once a year, SIM holds a job fair and networking session for its students, which allows them to meet with potential employers. Mr Lai said that this gave him an advantage, as it allowed him to leave an impression on his future employer, SMRT Corp. He said: “I was able to talk to the company to find out more about them and presented them with my resume.” Mr Foong of Adecco agreed that such job fairs were useful for both employers and students to network. He said: “Being present at their career fair, Adecco was able to reach out to fresh graduates, as well as experienced talent who were undertaking part-time studies with the institution.” For the networking session, the top students of the cohort
were selected to have their resumes compiled for employers in a CD.
Opportunities to grow
Mr Lai said: “At SIM, there are lots of opportunities out there which you can tap on.” He also liked the interview preparation workshops that SIM had. He said: “It taught me how to stand out in group assessment situations. In interviews, you are sometimes interviewed in groups, where it's not only important to be an idea generator, but also an idea evolver, which helps you to get yourself noticed. “They even had mock interviews so you really get a good idea of how to go about such interviews.”
During his time at SIM GE, Mr Lai was selected to be an “All Rounder Student” – those who are identified as being the best in their cohort both academically and in co-curricular activities. He said that the emphasis SIM placed on developing their best talent helped him a lot. He said: “I got a lot of training in many areas, like image consulting, personal profiling tests, and business letter writing.”Holistic development The SIM PLUS is a programme run by the Division of Student Life and Services (SLS) in SIM.
Holistic development
The director of SLS at SIM GE, Mrs Ho Soon Eng, said that SLS believes in the holistic development of students. She said: “The development of students beyond the classroom is an ongoing focus of SIM GE. Through the Career Services department, we provide a gateway for students to develop career planning and management skills. “This enhances their ability to identify options most appropriate to them, so they can increase their employability.”She added that certain skills were especially sought after in the workplace. She said: “What distinguish the most sought-after graduates are the soft skills of leadership, effective communication and interpersonal skills. “We offer students a variety of workshops to equip them with these essential skills for life.”
